Chapter 1 Exercises

Exercise 1: In the space below, capture your key family stories. Catalog your familial history of abuse, violence, suicide, murder, sexual abuse or rape, financial mistakes, alcoholism and other substance abuse, and so forth. Be radically honest. If you’re not certain about a particular part of the story, please interview some of your living relatives to glean some of their truth. Then journal what these family stories and behaviors have cost you. What parts of you have you allowed to shut down? What limiting beliefs about yourself have you unconsciously taken on? What possibilities may have passed you by?

Exercise 2: In the space below, now capture some of your family gifts. These are passed down, too! What talents, abilities, and positive behaviors were passed down to you? How have you been blessed by your family system? Detail how that has affected your life.

Exercise 3: What personal growth or spiritual work have you done to address the issues raised in your answers to Exercise 1? What do you think you still need to work on to change the story and limiting beliefs that resulted from them? How will you do that work? Who will support you?

Exercise 4: Now take an important moment to acknowledge yourself for the progress already accomplished! Allow yourself to feel great about the changes you have already introduced into your family system. Then write a couple commitments for continued growth. Be specific: What will you do? By when? Who will assist you? How will you know when that phase is complete? How will that feel?

Exercise 5: I invite you to write a couple affirmations to use on a daily basis to spur your personal work. Keep affirmations in the positive, in the present tense, and be specific. For example: I am a loving and forgiving man. Or: I release all limitations to attaining financial prosperity. Post your affirmations around your house or car, anyplace where you will see them—and repeat them—often each day!

Exercise 6: Now’s the time to capture your own personal stories. What are the seminal experiences that move you, hold you back, or motivate you? Share a few here and note the impact they have had on your life.

Exercise 7: (a). Which Healing Practices (or Steps) do you already incorporate into your life? How are they working to support your healing and growth? (b). Which of these practices scare or repel you? Why do you think that might be?

Exercise 8: Of those practices I recommend from my own life, which call to you? What practice might you add to your own healing regimen? How deeply will you commit to practicing whatever regimen you choose on a regular basis? In my experience, it works best to commit to a daily practice to both gain momentum and see maximum progress in your life!

Exercise 9: What is your Mission of Service? Don’t worry about the form being perfect! Just think of a vision of the world that calls to you and an action you can/do take to make that vision a reality. Write it down and try it on for a while to see if it fits!

Exercise 10: Journal in the space below some of your own healing journeys. How has your life been impacted by your ancestors’ wounds or healing?

Exercise 11: Detail below how parts of you might be “dead” or “in prison.” What needs to come alive for you to live the life you were meant to live?

Exercise 12: What messages do you carry that block you from living fully or living your Mission of Service completely on this planet? What can you do to change these messages?

Exercise 13: What forms of healing work call to you? What has worked for you? I invite you to journal on that topic and share a story or two of your own healing—and its impact on your life and your family.

Exercise 14: Do you have a Dark Shadow Mission? If so, what is it? How has that Mission worked in your life to keep you small and powerless? How has it hurt you and your family?

Exercise 15: Do you have a Golden Shadow Mission? If so, what is it? How has that Mission served your own healing? How has it guided your life in positive ways? Exercise 17: Share a story where you have helped another person. How has your own healing impacted your ability to be present for another? What impact did your help have on that person and his/her family?

Exercise 18: Where might your feelings and energy be blocked? What feelings are you withholding? Where can you go to get support in releasing these feelings in a healthy way?

Exercise 19: Where have you made a positive impact on your family, community, or the world? How does that feel? How might you continue exercising that positive influence?

Exercise 20: What awareness have you gained about your family’s story that may not have been spoken out loud? Journal this story and share it with another person.

Exercise 21: What are some of your family’s generational traumas that might be healed using the technique of Constellation Therapy? How have these family stories/traumas influenced you and your sense of well-being?

Exercise 22: What world problems do you see being healed by work such as Family Constellation Therapy and such awareness of the Seven Generations story? Is there a particular issue that calls to you to help with? How does that feel?
